Left 4 Dead is an excellent zombie movie-inspired PC game with many play modes including an online 8 player versus mode, online survival mode and a single player campaign mode. The setting will remind you of classic zombie movies like Night of the Living Dead.
Left 4 Dead tells the story of four survivors who are left stranded in a town full of zombies infested by a pandemic. The player has to choose one of the survivors and the remaining survivors are controlled by bots. The four survivors have to fight against different AI controlled zombies and make sure that his or her friend does not fall prey to the living dead. The graphics, sound effects and creepy environment makes the game one of the scariest horror games. A sequel to Left 4 Dead is slated for release in November 2009.

The Penumbra series is a horror-themed adventure game that contains more puzzles than action. Black Plague is the second PC game of the series. It continues with the story of a young physicist’s attempt to find the truth of his dead father’s mysterious letter. Trapped in an abandoned mine, the physicist has to find a way out by solving puzzles and exploring the mine to get some clues.
Unlike the first game, Black Plague allows users to use stealth, avoid enemy confrontations and focuses more on physics-based puzzles. In fact, the aim is to explore, interact and examine objects and employ them to solve different brainteasers. The physics-based puzzles and combat is reminiscent of Half Life 2, which makes the game difficult, yet engaging. With a puzzle-based approach and baffling story, Penumbra: Black Plague is revered as one of the best horror PC games.

Japanese horror movies may have scared your bones away, but reliving the same tensed moments in a game is scarier than you begged for. F.E.A.R does that to you exactly what you have seen in movies like the Ring or Dark Water. The game revolves around supernatural incidents, which Special Forces team called First Encounter Assault Recon (F.E.A.R) is called to deal and control the situation. Incidentally, the supernatural phenomenon is not caused by some huge Resident Evil-type monster, but a creepy little girl called Alma, whose origins come from faceless female ghosts (sounds scary, very scary!)
The game is a typical FPS with a horror-theme. You play the role of a Point Man of the Special Forces team. With extraordinary reflexes and a range of modern firearms, you have to solve different objectives to uncover the truth behind Alma‘s motives. However, there’s that psychological edge which plays with your emotions when you confront with Alma. The music and sound effects adds to the tension and perfectly blends with the circumstances. With a Japanese horror theme and outstanding sound effects, F.E.A.R’s gripping atmosphere is intense and well-crafted.

What do you get when you mix insane criminals and drug addicts, some of the most disgusting natural level designs, a chilling narrative and countless jump scares? You get Condemned: An Atmospheric masterpiece and a brutal look at drugs, insanity and violence. You play as a police officer investigating, and eventually hunting, a brutal serial killer with a thing for mannequins and carving up young women. The city is also going mad from an unknown source and causing drug addicts and lunatics to spill out of the cracks trying to bludgeon you to death with a large assortment of melee weapons. The combat is gripping and involves brutal combos, heavy hits, parries and kicks. The animations are slick and gruesome as they react to a log with nails or iron pipe crushing into their heads. The exploration leaves a lot to be desired as the game is a linear, and short, experience but its bombtastic approach to brutal combat and chilling level designs makes it one of the creepiest games to hit the system yet.

The original Resident Evil remains one of the PlayStation's most successful games. It was so popular, in fact, that it inspired a slew of similar horror-themed action/adventure games for the system. And while many would cite Resident Evil as the originator of this formula, the fact is that the lot of these games took their blueprint from a PC game, Infogrames' H.P. Lovecraft-inspired Alone in the Dark. Resident Evil 2 is no exception, following the familiar formula of suspense achieved through changing perspective and cinematic camera angles. Its PC lineage may explain why Resident Evil 2 makes a successful jump from the PlayStation, but only if you can accept some decidedly foreign design conventions inherent to console games.

Resident Evil 2 begins shortly after the first one ended. Raccoon City has been overrun by the zombies created by the unscrupulous Umbrella corporation. While the heroes of the first game are absent from the story-driven portion of Resident Evil 2, you still have your choice of two characters. Actually, it isn't much of a choice. To finish the game, you must play through each section as both characters.

Most of Resident Evil 2 takes place in the Raccoon City Police Station, where both Leon and Claire have taken refuge from the zombie infestation. Inside, you'll solve a variety of puzzles, which mostly involve finding keys to unlock previously inaccessible areas. The puzzles are simple, and you'll find yourself sliding blocks onto pressure plates and fitting medallions into their resting places. Likewise, the action, while graphic in content, is somewhat on the light side. You just point your character in the general vicinity of a zombie and fire your weapon.

The objective of Silent Hill 2 is to guide the player character, James Sunderland, through the monster-filled town of Silent Hill as he searches for his deceased wife. The game features a third-person view, with various camera angles. The default control for Silent Hill 2 has James moving in the direction that he is facing when the player tilts the analog stick upwards. Silent Hill 2 does not use a heads-up display; to check James' health, location, and items, the player must enter the pause-game menu to review his status. Throughout the game, James collects maps, which can only be read if there is sufficient light or when his flashlight is on. He also updates relevant maps to reflect locked doors, clues, and obstructions, and writes down the content of all documents for future reference.

Much of the gameplay consists of navigating the town and finding keys or other items to bypass doors or other obstructions, with less focus on killing enemies. Occasionally puzzles will be presented, often with riddles left for the player to interpret. The difficulty levels of the enemies and the puzzles are determined independently by the player before starting the game. James keeps a radio with him, which alerts him to the presence of creatures by emitting static, allowing him to detect them even through the thick fog. He also tilts his head in the direction of a nearby item or monster. For combat, he finds three melee weapons and three firearms over the course of the game, with another two melee weapons unlocked during replays. "Health" restoratives and ammunition can be found throughout the game.
